Lent 2009

Shouting Joy! Sharing Love!

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.”     Matthew 28:19

2/25     Ash Wednesday         “Extreme Makeover”

“If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”  Matthew 5:29

3/1       “Taking the Steam Out of Anger”

Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?  If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but  you must master it."  Genesis 4:6-7

3/8       “The Lure and Lie of Desire”

“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.”  Genesis 3:6

3/15     “Fatal Attraction”

One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?"  2Samuel 11:2-3

3/22     “No Satisfaction”

“So Ahab went home, sullen and angry because Naboth the Jezreelite had said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." He lay on his bed sulking and refused to eat.”  1Kings 21:4

3/29     “The Myth of Maintaining Control”

“The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread."  Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone.' " Luke 4:3-4

Lent is a call to take a serious look at the brevity of life and to consider the way we are living our lives. As ashes are placed on the head of worshippers in the form of a cross the pastor says, “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” These are the very words God said to Adam after he made the fateful choice to disobey God’s command.

The title of our Lenten journey is: “Are You Staying in the Fight or Keeping Up Appearances?” Each week the sermon will focus on a particular temptation we face. We will examine the temptation, the deception Satan presents, the effects, and a strategy to face it successfully.  The sermon titles and bible texts are as follows:
